March 12, 1920 - February 13, 2011
Charles H. "Chick" Helm, 90, of North Vernon, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011, Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Born March 12, 1920 in Jennings County, Mr. Helm was the son of the late John and Linda Henry Helm. He married Ruth Evelyn Ertel on May 10, 1948. She survives.
Mr. Helm served in the Army during World War II. He owned and operated the Helm Family Restaurant from 1971-1983. He served as superintendent of the State Highway Department, as Republican County Chairman in the Mid 70's, as coroner of Jennings County for two terms, and also on the North Vernon Park Board. He was a volunteer fireman with the North Vernon - Center Township fire department for 25 years. He was a member of First Christian Church, and served as deacon from 1953 till present and as trustee from 1991 till present.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Evelyn Helm of North Vernon; three sons, Steven, John, and Tony Helm of North Vernon; two daughters, Judith Howe and Susan Westerman, of North Vernon; a sister, Betty Cupp of Seymour; grandchildren Kevin, Chris, Brandon, Jonathan, Jeremy, Jammie, and Carrie Helm, Rebecca Spencer, Erin Treadway, Deanna Jackson, Jill Leach, Heather Hanson, Kyla, and Zach Seal; and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeff Helm; and brothers and sisters Leslie Helm, Roy Helm, Carl Helm, Roger Helm and Mildred Jordan.
Funeral Information
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, February 18, 2011 at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral Home in North Vernon. The Rev. Ron Bridgewater will officiate. Interment will be at Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 pm Thursday and on Friday from 10 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
