Obituary

Betty Lou Wissel, 93, of North Vernon, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Deacon Larry French will officiate. Burial will follow the service in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Born on March 21, 1932, in Marengo, Indiana, Betty was the daughter of Everett and Ruth (Pierson) Zehr. She attended Marengo schools until she moved to Jennings County her senior year of high school. She was united in marriage to Richard Wissel on February 16, 1953. A devoted homemaker, she dedicated her life to her family and community. She was an avid reader and took pleasure in engaging with crossword puzzles and trivia games, which reflected her quick wit and sharp intellect. Her sense of humor brought joy to many, and she was well-liked by friends and family alike. Betty devoted her time to volunteering at St. Mary's School, where her contributions greatly impacted the lives of many students. A member of the Kaiser Club, she served as Secretary and engaged in community activities, always eager to lend a helping hand. Betty was also known for daily eight mile walks along Norris Avenue, a routine that kept her active and energized. Betty is survived by son, Bruce (Nancy) Wissel of Richmond; daughters, Janet (William) Berry of North Vernon, Karen (Shawn) Tuell of Columbus; brother, Charles "Pete" (Virginia) Zehr of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Brent (Hannah Kraemer) Day, Craig (Jennifer) Day, Leslie (Anthony) Harper, Bryce (Jenni) Wissel, and Katie Wissel; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Wissel; parents, Everett and Ruth (Pierson) Zehr and daughter, Kay Sizemore. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
