John “Jack” Wickens, 75, of North Vernon, passed away at 11:05 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2019 at Franciscan Hospice in Indianapolis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Jerry Byrd will officiate. Burial and military graveside rites will be conducted in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. at Sawyer – Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service.
Born December 30, 1943, in North Vernon, Jack was the son of the late Bartholomew and Velma (Campbell) Wickens. He was united in marriage to Maredia Gevedon on October 29, 1976. She survives.
After graduating from North Vernon High School in 1963, Jack went on to join the Navy that same year. He served during the Vietnam War on the USS John Kennedy before being discharged in 1967. He then was a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years and was a member of the Local 181 Operating Engineers. Jack was also a member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge, American Legion, AmVets, and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Jack enjoyed playing music, fishing, playing cards, and pool. He served on the North Vernon City Council for eight years.
In addition to his wife, Reda Wickens of North Vernon, survivors include sons, Scott Hall and Chad Wickens both of North Vernon; sister, Linda Vawter of Shelby County; grandchildren, Dakota Miller, Mercedes Franck, and Arminda Wickens; 2 great grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joann Anglin.
