Doris Jean Sinkes, 86, of North Vernon, passed away at 3:42 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Bethel Baptist Church. Rev. Ricky Persons and Rev. Bruce Watts will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.
Born July 9, 1931, in Jennings County, Doris was the daughter of the late Ernest and Eva Cox Stewart. She graduated from Hayden High School in 1950. She married Gerald “Gene” Sinkes on August 15, 1951 and he preceded her in death on October 24, 1996.
Doris retired from the Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in 1993 after 19 years of employment. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Loyal Daughters Sunday School Class. She enjoyed spending time with her family, word searches, reading, southern gospel music and The Gaithers.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl “Sherry” (Paul) Eaton and Carol Ann (Rusty) Jenkins, all of North Vernon; one son, Timothy (Dawn Washam) Sinkes of North Vernon; two sisters, Nancy (Bill) Sims and Betty Coyle, all of North Vernon; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Roth, Cortney Cloud, Michelle Sinkes, Cory and Kacia Jenkins, Jared Sinkes, Alisha Eaton and Joe Miller; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Eva Stewart, her husband, Gerald “Gene” Sinkes and one son, Larry Duane Sinkes.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Bethel Baptist Church or Autism Speaks.
