He was the son of Charles and Carrie (Tebbe) May, born May 31, 1929 in Anderson, IN, the youngest of five children. Clyde graduated from North Vernon High School in 1947. While a junior in high school, he joined the Naval Reserves.

In 1949, he married JoAnn Verbarg, his high school sweetheart. Clyde and JoAnn had five children. Their first, Patricia Ann, died in 1959 whereupon the family moved to Odessa, Texas. Clyde loved his German Shepard dogs and maintaining his forest with his family. After 47 years of marriage, JoAnn passed away.

He married Dorothy Ash in 1997 and they enjoyed 21 years of love, family, pies, and fudge. She survives and lives in Columbus.
