I was saddened to see that Jo passed away. I worked with him in the library system at IU Bloomington for several years back in the late 90's, and I always found him to be an intelligent and personable guy. He had a very quirky sense of humor, and I'm not sure everyone always got his jokes. Personally, I found them to be clever and witty. I don't think he ever knew a stranger or had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was also a talented musician, and he once did a very good cover of Michael Jackson's song Ben for myself and another graduate student in the Geography Dept. at IU. The world's certainly a less interesting place without you in it Jo. RIP

I met Joe a few days after his arrival in Raleigh, NC. While I am quite a bit older I have been a vigorous athlete and was a regular at the Raleigh Y. He ran on a treadmill next to me and introduced himself and that was the first beginning of a friendship that lasted until his passing. That friendship grew and I quickly saw the uniqueness, kindness, likable nature and intelligence of this young man. He told me of the brain injury that had been a major setback and his ambition to extend his education. I introduced him to some local contacts at NCSU about a graduate program as he worked at the local USGS office.

Joe pursued some of the local contacts but soon began having issues with some coworkers at the local office and before long was looking to seek other job opportunities with the next taking him to Baltimore. We maintained contact throughout his time there. I wrote letters of recommendation for him for graduate school at Temple where things seem to go well for a short while. The brain injury seemed to not go away with respect to his developing issues with those with whom worked on a daily basis and that pattern seemed to follow him.

He was always interesting to be around whenever I was in his company and shared with me many fond memories of his family. He dearly loved his Mom and siblings was was especially close to both Sally and Jimmy. He clearly had significant talent in music and would often play the piano or guitar in my presence. He was really good on the piano.

I wish I could have been able to to help him deal with his internal difficulties for he is such a loss to those who knew him well.

Joseph was a friend in Houston and a remarkably friendly individual. He used to love singing with his guitar and had a wonderful laugh and sense of humor. Although I did lose touch with him, he did follow his dreams to Del Rio, Texas, Roanoke, his beloved Philly and, for a second stay, his last stop in Baltimore. I'm so glad he was buried at Immaculate Conception since he used to kid me by calling me "Sister Mary Thomas" (my name is Tom) after a SMT siting near a hospital complex in Baltimore when we were out hiking the streets together. I just invite God to entertain heaven with Joseph's eternal spirit and I am very grateful to have been considered amongst his friends.

Joe, was ( is a good friend), and is missed very much. I walk the Wissahickon, where he loved to jog, and take in natures beauty, I am plating a tree in his name so a part of him will remain here, along the Whissahickon.
