Arthur V. Smith, Jr., 89, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:39 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at his residence.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016, at Holy Family Cemetery in Oldenburg, Indiana. The Rev. David Kobak will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon.

Born March 27, 1927, in Indianapolis, Arthur was the son of Arthur and Esther (Judkins) Smith, Sr.  He graduated from Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. He married Betty Joan Bland, and she preceded him in death on October 12, 1977.

Arthur worked as a heavy equipment salesman and had served in the United States Army. He was a member of VFW, American Legion, AmVets, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, painting and camping.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Bischoff of Batesville and Robin Smith of Miami, Florida; three sons, Arthur (Gerri)  Smith, III, of Seymour, Anthony Smith of North Vernon, and Kelly (Katie) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Marjorie Winebrenner of Auburn, Indiana; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; daughter, Kimberly Marie Bischoff; two sisters, Vera Ruth Smith and Donna Smith; and two brothers, William Edward Smith and Robert Smith.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Wounded Warrior Project.
